Speech-language pathologists work with people of all ages. They assist people with all aspects of communication and with swallowing as well.

  • Articulation- Speech-language pathologists help people work on how we say our sounds and put them together in speech. Children might substitute one sound for another sound, leave out sounds, or distort sounds in their speech.
  • Language- Speech-language pathologists can assist with understanding language, using language to communicate, using vocabulary and with grammar. These language problems can cause issues in school when children learn to read and write.
  • Social Communication/Pragmatics- Speech-language pathologists help others learn the rules for conversation, so they know how to take turns in conversations, and initiate and end conversations.
  • Voice- Speech-language pathologists can work on how our voice sounds. Our voices might be hoarse, too soft, too loud, or too nasal. The SLP might work with professionals such as an ear nose and throat doctor to help guide treatment.
